Interactive wands are one of the most magical experiences in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando! These special wands have a tiny black sensor at the tip that reflects light back to hidden cameras at each spell location. When you make the correct wand movement (and say the spell, if you’re feeling extra magical), the system recognizes it—and voilà!—the magic comes to life.
Every interactive wand comes in an Ollivander’s box with a dual-sided spell map—one side for Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, and the other for the Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe. With your wand and map in hand, you’re ready to start casting spells all over the parks!
Where can I buy an Interactive Wand at Universal Orlando?
Interactive wands are available at several locations throughout the Universal Orlando Resort, including:

Absolutely! Your first-generation interactive wand still works at all existing wand locations in Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, and even Knockturn Alley. You just won’t get the new second-gen features like app integration or haptic feedback.

How Do You Cast Spells in the Wizarding World?
Here’s the spell-casting process, step-by-step:
1️⃣ Find the gold medallion on the ground—these mark the spell spots!
2️⃣ Stand directly behind the medallion, facing the window or object you want to enchant.
3️⃣ Look for the hidden infrared cameras (usually near the display) and point your wand at the four tiny red lights.
4️⃣ Perform the correct wand movement as shown on the medallion.
5️⃣ Say the spell name (optional, but fun!).
6️⃣ Watch the magic happen!
Pixie Dust Pro Tip: Keep your movements small—wrist flicks work best. And don’t worry if it doesn’t work right away! Some spells are trickier than others.
Are there team members who can help me if I'm stuggling with casting spells?

How long do Interactive Wands last?
The magic lasts forever! Since interactive wands don’t rely on batteries (except for the new second-gen wands, which include a AAAA battery), they’ll work on every visit. Just bring your wand back to Universal, and you’re good to go. If your wand stops working, Universal’s wand experts at the shops can help fix it.
What’s the “Wand Chooses the Wizard” experience?
At Ollivanders Wand Shop (Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade), you can step into a magical moment straight out of the books—the Wand Chooses the Wizard show. During this interactive ceremony, one lucky guest is chosen to have their wand “choose them,” complete with special effects, music, and a little extra magic.

Slug & Jiggers (Diagon Alley): Look for the dragon dung in the far-right window—wave your wand, and it bubbles and smells like fertilizer.
Ministry of Magic (Epic Universe): Not a secret spell, but don’t miss the talking portraits in Le Gobelet Noir—they chat with you and respond to spells like Incendio, Colovaria, Engorgio, and more!
