Disneyland Rides for Disney World Regulars: What to Prioritize in a Short Trip

If you know Walt Disney World well, a Disneyland trip can scramble your usual ride list. Some names are familiar, some familiar rides feel completely different, and some attractions are only in California. With two and a half park days, we wanted to spend our time on the experiences we couldn't simply repeat on our next Disney World trip.

California was doing its best impression of Walt Disney World in July during our September trip. Temperatures climbed above 100 degrees, with much more humidity than we'd expected. Rides went down, and we spent more time resting at Pixar Place Hotel and sitting in lounges than we'd imagined. Pack your patience along with the sunscreen.

We didn't finish every ride on our list. Indiana Jones Adventure was closed for refurbishment, and Grizzly River Run was unexpectedly down for most of our visit. We still managed many of the headliners, plus some smaller rides we had been excited to revisit.

We also had Oogie Boogie Bash tickets, so our trip naturally leaned toward Disney California Adventure. Here is what actually made the cut, what we missed, and what we'd tell another Disney World family planning a short Disneyland visit.

The short answer: where should a Disney World regular start?

With only two and a half days, we prioritized Disneyland’s different versions and California-only headliners, then let WDW rides with a slightly different twist fill the gaps.

In Disneyland Park, prioritize the rides that are truly different for your group. For us, that meant Haunted Mansion Holiday, Pirates of the Caribbean, and some of Disneyland's Fantasyland and Toontown attractions. Indiana Jones Adventure would have been high on our list if it had been open. We chose to skip Matterhorn Bobsleds and Space Mountain because our time and energy were limited.

In Disney California Adventure (DCA), build around Cars Land and Radiator Springs Racers, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT!, and Incredicoaster if your group enjoys thrills. We also made time for WEB SLINGERS and Monsters, Inc. Grizzly River Run was on our list, but it was down most of the time we were there.

Your own favorites will change the order, but this gives you a place to start.

Which Disneyland rides can’t you do at Disney World?

Indiana Jones Adventure: our big missed ride

The Temple of the Forbidden Eye is a major Disneyland priority for a Disney World regular: a fast, rough, story-driven vehicle adventure that currently has no WDW version. It was closed for refurbishment when we visited, so it goes straight onto our return-trip list. Check the Disneyland app for your dates before making it the centerpiece of a day. When operating, it is among the Lightning Lane Multi Pass attractions.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

Disneyland's mountain has no Florida equivalent. This coaster is a piece of Disneyland history, but the bobsled ride can be surprisingly roughtand jostly. We decided to skip it with our limited time. If someone in your group is sensitive to rough rides, admire the mountain and use that time elsewhere.

The Fantasyland dark rides

Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, and Snow White's Enchanted Wish make a lovely little Disneyland-only cluster. We walked onto Pinocchio and Snow White with minimal waiting just after lunch and enjoyed the childhood nostalgia. They weren't must-do rides for us, so we let the others go. Choose the stories that appeal to your group instead of trying to clear Fantasyland just for the sake of a checklist.

Other distinctly Disneyland stops

We chose Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage because they sounded wonderfully whimsical and have no current WDW counterpart. Storybook Land Canal Boats, Casey Jr. Circus Train, and the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough are other smaller experiences that give Disneyland its own personality. None needs to outrank your group's headliners.

Which Walt Disney World rides are worth repeating at Disneyland?

A familiar ride name doesn't always mean the same experience on both coasts. A familiar ride name doesn't always mean the same experience on both coasts. Other Disneyland versions have different layouts, extra details, or a setting that changes how the ride feels. Here are the ones we made time for, along with Space Mountain, which we chose to skip.

Attraction	Why a WDW regular might make time for it
Pirates of the Caribbean	Disneyland's original version has a longer journey and a wonderful New Orleans Square setting. We think it's far superior to the Magic Kingdom version, and we'd make time for it again.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad	We enjoyed seeing a different take on a favorite. Ride if your group loves Big Thunder (we do), but it needn't crowd out an attraction you've never done.
Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway	This is a family favorite, so we rode it even though the central ride is very similar to Hollywood Studios. Give yourself time to enjoy Disneyland's El CapiTOON Theater queue, its a hoot!
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters	This is Disneyland's take on the shooting-gallery ride WDW calls Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. Magic Kingdom's updated version is very similar to Disneyland's. We fit it in, but if time is tight, choose it based on how much your group enjoys Buzz.
“it's a small world”	We rode it, loved the outdoor façade, and had fun spotting the Disney characters tucked among the dolls.
Jungle Cruise	We made room for another trip down the rivers. It's a familiar concept with a California setting and its own skipper-led experience.
Space Mountain	The California ride has side-by-side seating and a different track. We chose to skip it because our time was short; coaster fans may make the opposite call.
Haunted Mansion Holiday	We rode it twice. The Nightmare Before Christmas makeover was our hands-down favorite part of Disneyland Park.

We also left familiar attractions such as Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the Enchanted Tiki Room, and Mad Tea Party off our priority list. Each has its own Disneyland touches, and we’d happily stop if a favorite had a short wait. With our limited time, though, none mattered as much to us as the rides and shows we couldn’t experience at Walt Disney World.

Haunted Mansion Holiday was worth riding twice

We expected a seasonal overlay. We weren't prepared for just how elaborate and immersive it would be. The Nightmare Before Christmas details went well beyond a few decorations, and we were delighted to go back for another ride. It was our favorite thing at Disneyland Park. If your visit falls during Haunted Mansion Holiday, give it a higher spot on your list even if you've ridden the regular Haunted Mansion many times at WDW.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure also has a California home. We focused on other rides during this trip, but Tiana fans can certainly make room for it. Seasonal offerings and refurbishments can change which version is operating.

What about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge?

If you know Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios, Disneyland’s Batuu will feel very familiar. Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run weren’t priorities for us with only two and a half days, so we spent that time on experiences we couldn’t do at WDW. Disneyland does give Star Wars fans an extra reason to visit after dark, though: Shadows of Memory: A Skywalker Saga projects onto the Batuu spires, and Fire of the Rising Moons offers a Star Wars view of the fireworks on select nights. Check the entertainment schedule if either belongs on your must-do list.

Make time for a Disneyland show, too

We watched Fantasmic! and Halloween Screams with Fireworks. Disneyland's Fantasmic! felt quite different from the Hollywood Studios production. In fact, seeing it made the WDW storyline click into place for us in a way it hadn't before. If you have an evening in Disneyland Park, save room for a show instead of filling every minute with rides.

🧚‍♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: Check the entertainment schedule before settling on an evening ride plan. Halloween Screams includes fireworks on select nights, and Fantasmic! showtimes can affect how you spend the rest of your night.

DCA: where the Florida comparison really stops working

Cars Land and Radiator Springs Racers

Cars Land is more than one ride to check off. Walk through Radiator Springs, give it time after dark if your schedule allows, and make Radiator Springs Racers a top DCA priority. We had expected something along the lines of Test Track with Cars. It was so much more than that and became our favorite ride in either park. We enjoyed it enough to ride twice, purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass on two separate days. Single Pass is a separate purchase from Multi Pass. Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters are smaller Cars Land additions if the waits and your energy cooperate.

🧚‍♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: Decide whether Racers is worth a Single Pass for your group before your park day. We chose to pay for it twice so we could protect time for the rest of DCA. Standby and single rider are other options; single rider works best if everyone is comfortable splitting up.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

WDW's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a coaster; DCA's Guardians ride sends you up and down in the Collector's tower. We rode both the daytime Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! and the Halloween eclusive night-time version, Monsters After Dark, although we managed them in the opposite order from the story. Monsters After Dark picks up after the breakout: Groot has been left behind, and Rocket needs your help to go back and rescue him. Together, the two rides were an enjoyable romp. Expect loud music and repeated drops. Give anyone who dislikes that stomach-floating feeling an easy opt-out.

🧚‍♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: If you want to follow the story, ride Mission: BREAKOUT! before Monsters After Dark. Remember Monsters After Dark is exclusive to fall, and Check the app for the switch between the two during your visit, and give both a place on your list if your group loves Guardians.

Incredicoaster, WEB SLINGERS, and Grizzly River Run

We rode Incredicoaster, an outdoor launch coaster with no direct WDW match, and WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, an interactive Avengers Campus ride. Think Toy Story Mania, but with spider webs instead of a pull string. Two of the three of us were spectacularly bad at it, and we still had more fun than we'd expected. For thrill fans, Incredicoaster belongs high on the list. Spider-Man fans may make WEB SLINGERS a priority; other groups could put it below Racers or Guardians on a short visit.

We had hoped to ride Grizzly River Run, a California-only raft ride, but it was unexpectedly unavailable for most of our time in California. It would have been especially welcome in that heat!

We also rode Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!, a dark ride at DCA that Disney World doesn't have. Pixar Pal-A-Round, especially its swinging gondolas, is another distinctly DCA option, although “gentle Ferris wheel” may not describe how everyone feels about the swinging side! It was a hard no for us.

The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure and Toy Story Midway Mania! are easier to leave off a short-trip priority list if you ride their WDW counterparts often. Check which Soarin' film is playing before you visit; DCA is currently showing Soarin' Across America, while other versions can return.

How we would plan two and a half days around these rides

Give each park a starting plan, then let the trip change it. We spent more time at DCA because of Oogie Boogie Bash. You might choose a more even split. Start your Disneyland time with the rides and evening shows you most want, then make a deliberate plan for Racers and your other DCA priorities. Treat the half day as space for missed rides, a repeat favorite, or whichever park your group wants more of.

If you're going to Oogie Boogie Bash, plan the DCA portion separately. Decide which rides you'd like to finish before party time so you can enjoy the treat trails and entertainment without trying to squeeze your whole ride list into the event. Lightning Lane passes aren't available during Oogie Boogie Bash.

Make two lists before you travel: your must-do rides and your nice-if-it-works rides. Indiana Jones was closed for refurbishment, Grizzly River Run was down much of the time, and the heat shortened our park days. Having other priorities helped us keep moving without turning the trip into a hunt for everything we'd missed.

Use Lightning Lane for your actual priorities. We used Lightning Lane Multi Pass and purchased Single Pass for Radiator Springs Racers twice. At Disneyland, Multi Pass selections begin after you enter a park; you choose the next available return window, then make another selection after redeeming one or after two hours, subject to availability. Racers is a separate Single Pass purchase. If you have Park Hopper admission, Multi Pass can be used in both parks. 🧚‍♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: When a priority ride goes down, choose your next nearby attraction or an indoor break and check the app again later. Standing by a closed queue won't bring it back any faster, especially on a day when everyone needs a break from the heat.

That's a Wrap

We rode a lot in two and a half days, even with the heat, a party, and the rides that didn't cooperate. Our Disneyland Park favorite was one we chose to repeat: Haunted Mansion Holiday. Radiator Springs Racers won us over at DCA. We also left with reasons to return (looking at you, Indy). A family with small children could happily trade Incredicoaster for three Fantasyland rides. A coaster-loving group could do the reverse. Your list should reflect what your people will enjoy, even if a few boxes stay unchecked.

A short Disneyland trip gives you plenty of choices and very little time to make them.
