Rider Swap at Walt Disney World: 2025 FAQ + Pro Tips for Families
Visiting Disney World with little ones who aren’t quite tall enough (or ready!) for the bigger rides? You don’t have to miss out on the thrills. Rider Swap (also called Rider Switch) lets adults take turns riding without standing in the full line twice. It’s one of the most valuable time-savers for parents, grandparents, and multi-generational groups.
Jump to Section:
✨ What Is Rider Swap?
It’s exactly what it sounds like—one adult waits with the non-riding child while the rest of the party rides. Then, you “swap,” and the waiting adult rides without waiting in the full queue again.

🧚♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: This isn’t just for parents with toddlers—it works for anyone in your party who doesn’t want to ride, whether they’re scared of thrills, don’t like spinning, or just want a break.
🛠 How Rider Swap Works in 2025

Find the Rider Swap Sign & Cast Member
Most attractions with Rider Swap have a sign at the entrance. A Cast Member will confirm your group and set up the pass before you enter the line.
Get Your Digital Pass
The Cast Member will scan the MagicBand, MagicMobile, or ticket for the adult waiting with the non-rider (and the non-rider themselves). The pass will appear in the My Disney Experience app under “My Day.”
First Group Rides
The rest of your party rides via Standby or Lightning Lane (if you’ve booked a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass, or Premier Pass—all riders must have their own Lightning Lane for that attraction).
Swap and Ride
When the first group exits, the waiting adult and one additional guest can ride, usually through the Lightning Lane entrance.
🧚♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: Most Rider Swap passes have a one-hour return window, but Cast Members can be flexible depending on the ride and crowds.

🚫 Common Rider Swap Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Even though Rider Swap is simple, these are the most common hiccups:
Not Asking First – You must request Rider Swap before entering the line.
Expecting Everyone to Ride Twice – Only one guest can join the second adult; if you have multiple older kids, you’ll need to pick.
Forgetting It Still Takes Time – It’s faster than Standby twice, but slower than a single ride-through—factor it into your plans.
Last-Minute Kid Nerves – If a child changes their mind in line, ask politely at the front. Often, they’ll allow one adult to exit with the child, then ride solo after the group finishes (not an official policy, but it’s worked for us many times).

Wasting the Waiting Time – It's perfect if your toddler can just grab a nap in their stroller, however as every parent knows, sitting and waiting is hard for kiddos. Which leads to grumpiness for both the child and the waiting parent. Use this as a chance to let the non-rider have fun—grab a snack, do a character meet, or explore one of the kid play areas below.
