Stardust Racers at Epic Universe in Universal Orlando
Stardust Racers sits right in the center of Celestial Park — and it’s just as impressive in person as it looks in photos.

Stardust Racers recently closed for a short refurbishment, and the reopening has taken a little longer than originally expected. Since Epic Universe opened in May 2025, the coaster has also had occasional delayed openings, temporary downtime, and periods where only one side of the racing track operated.

Naturally, that’s led to a lot of questions — and a lot of online speculation. Many families planning a trip ask: “Is Stardust Racers closed?”

When we visited Epic Universe during previews, Stardust Racers was actually the ride we were the least certain about. We expected to fall in love with the Wizarding World and Super Nintendo World.

We didn’t expect the coaster to steal the day.

By the end of our visit it had jumped to one of our favorite thrill rides in all of Universal Orlando — honestly beating both VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure for our family. It’s fast, incredibly smooth, and the racing element makes it feel completely different from a traditional coaster.

Our first preview visit — and the ride we didn’t expect to love became the one we couldn’t stop talking about.
Our first preview visit — and the ride we didn’t expect to love became the one we couldn’t stop talking about.

But we also experienced something else that day: the ride went down multiple times.

The same thing happened again on our October 2025 visit.

So if you’ve been planning a trip and keep seeing posts that “Stardust Racers keeps closing,” you’re not imagining it — and it’s completely fair to wonder:

Still deciding whether Epic Universe should be part of your trip at all, our full Epic Universe park guide explains what’s actually there and who the park is best for.

The Short Answer

Stardust Racers is experiencing periodic downtime while Universal fine-tunes a brand-new, extremely complex coaster operating in real Florida weather conditions.

This is not a safety problem.

It is a first-year reliability adjustment phase — something almost every major new headliner attraction goes through — but it does change how you should plan your day at Epic Universe.

What Is Currently Happening

Stardust Racers, the dual-launch racing coaster in Celestial Park and one of Epic Universe’s signature attractions, has had several temporary closures and delayed openings since the park opened.

The ride is operating — just not on a perfectly reliable schedule yet. Some days it opens late, pauses during the day, or temporarily runs only one side of the race.

This is frustrating if it’s your #1 priority ride, but it’s also very typical for a brand-new headliner attraction.

Why This Ride Behaves Differently Than Other Coasters

Here’s the part that gets lost in most online discussions.

Stardust Racers isn’t just another roller coaster added to a theme park lineup. It’s closer to a choreographed performance happening every few minutes — and the ride system is constantly checking that every piece of that performance is perfectly timed.

During previews, what surprised us most wasn’t just the speed. It was how often the two trains interacted. You aren’t simply racing another car in the distance — the trains cross, twist, and “almost” meet multiple times. Those near-miss moments are what make the ride feel so unique… and they are also exactly why the system is so sensitive.

For that illusion to work safely, the computers have to know precisely where both trains are at all times and how fast they’re moving.

If anything is even slightly outside expected values — wind, temperature, launch speed, weight distribution, or timing — the ride pauses automatically.

So when people hear “the ride went down,” they often imagine a breakdown.

What’s actually happening most of the time is closer to this:the system noticed something didn’t match its prediction and chose caution.

And Stardust Racers has a lot more variables than a typical coaster:

  • two trains that must stay synchronized

  • multiple launches that depend on exact speed calculations

  • outdoor track affected by Florida weather

  • computer-timed crossings where trains intentionally come close to each other

Because of that, the ride’s safety tolerances are extremely tight. A traditional coaster might keep operating under the same conditions — this one will stop and reset instead.

A number of factors could be causing this at any given time.

1. Dueling coaster timing

Two trains must run in precise synchronization. If timing is off by even a small margin, the system stops the ride automatically.

2. Sensors and safety systems

Modern coasters are intentionally sensitive. If a sensor reads outside expected values — temperature, speed, position, or spacing — the ride pauses.

That’s not a failure. That’s the safety system working correctly.

3. Florida weather

This coaster is surprisingly affected by:

  • cold mornings

  • high winds

  • heavy humidity

Because the ride relies on exact speed calculations, environmental conditions can trigger automatic shutdowns while engineers recalibrate the launch timing.

4. The “new ride” adjustment period

Theme parks cannot fully simulate thousands of real riders every day.Once a ride opens, engineers gather real operational data and begin tuning it for reliability.

Almost every major new attraction goes through this.

Is the Ride Safe?

It’s fair to address something many people are quietly wondering. After last fall’s tragic theme park incident (which understandably received a lot of attention), guests are paying much closer attention to ride closures and downtime. So when people see a brand-new coaster pausing frequently or opening late, it can feel concerning — especially if you’re traveling with kids or planning a once-in-a-long-time trip.

Here’s the important distinction:

A ride closing often is not the same thing as a ride operating unsafely. In fact, modern theme park attractions are designed to do the opposite — they stop before anything reaches an unsafe condition.

Stardust Racers uses extremely conservative safety programming. The system constantly monitors train speed, spacing, and environmental conditions. If any measurement falls outside a very small acceptable range, the ride automatically pauses and resets.

That means the downtime guests are noticing is usually the ride choosing caution, not experiencing a dangerous failure.

I also want to share our personal experience: the ride feels extremely controlled and smooth. The restraints are secure, the ride vehicles are stable, and operations felt very deliberate. Nothing about riding it felt rushed or unpredictable — if anything, it felt like a system designed to stop early rather than continue under questionable conditions.

In practical terms, frequent stops are usually evidence of a cautious ride system, not a dangerous one. Modern attractions are programmed to shut down far earlier than older rides ever would have.

What Downtime Actually Looks Like in the Park

During previews and recent operations, the coaster has often opened later than the park rather than staying closed all day. This was our experience during our last visit. In many cases guests who stayed flexible were still able to ride — just not on a rigid schedule.

That’s an important difference. This is not typically a “closed for the day” situation. It’s a “watch and adapt” ride.

What This Means for Planning Your Epic Universe Day

This does matter for your trip planning. The biggest mistake visitors can make right now:

The biggest planning mistake right now is treating Stardust Racers like a reliable “ride anytime” attraction.

Treat it like Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure in its opening year. If it is running, and it is a must-do ride for you, stand in line then so you have the opportunity to ride it.

Do not wait for:

  • nighttime

  • after dinner

  • your “last ride”

Because the most common pattern right now is delayed openings or temporary downtime. This will lead to longer lines when it is up, which may mean you spend more time waiting.

🧚‍♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: If you see the ride testing or operating when you enter the park, change your plan and head there early. Flexibility is the best strategy at a brand-new theme park.

Here’s the part many visitors don’t realize: Epic Universe is not built around a single headliner ride. Most families end the day talking about Nintendo, the Ministry of Magic, or Berk. Stardust Racers enhances the day — but it rarely determines whether the park was worth the trip.

Should You Still Visit Epic Universe?

A lot of families are asking the same practical question:

If Stardust Racers is unreliable right now, should we change our plans?

For most visitors — no. Where this matters most:

  • teens and thrill-ride focused groups

  • coaster enthusiasts

  • guests planning only one single day at Universal

  • visitors skipping Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida

Even on a day when ride schedules change, moments like meeting Toothless are what families remember most

If Stardust Racers is the main reason for your trip, flexibility helps. Plan to ride early in the day and be ready to adjust your schedule, or consider making Universal Orlando a multi-day trip.

Many visitors end up splitting their time between parks once they see how much there is to do. Our Universal Orlando Park Planning Guide dives into the ins and outs of the all the parks.

Stardust Racers FAQ

Is Stardust Racers permanently closed?

No. The ride is not permanently closed. Temporary closures and delayed openings right now are related to maintenance adjustments and normal first-year operational tuning, not a long-term shutdown.

Should I cancel my Epic Universe day if Stardust Racers is down?

No. Epic Universe is not a single-ride park. Most families spend a full day in Super Nintendo World, the Ministry of Magic, and Berk even if they never ride the coaster. Think of Stardust Racers as a bonus headliner — not the only reason to visit.

What is the best time of day to try to ride Stardust Racers?

As early as possible once it begins operating. New attractions are most reliable earlier in the day after opening tests are complete. If you see the ride running, head there rather than saving it for nighttime.

Why does Stardust Racers keep stopping during the day?

The coaster uses very tight safety tolerances. Weather conditions, timing differences between trains, or sensor readings outside a small acceptable range can trigger an automatic pause and reset. Most stops are precautionary, not breakdowns.

The Real Takeaway

When we visited Epic Universe during previews, Stardust Racers was down when we arrived and there was no reopening time posted. Normally that’s exactly the kind of situation that can derail a park day — especially when it’s the ride everyone is most excited about.

So we pivoted.

We grabbed an iced coffee and wandered into the Ministry of Magic instead. What was supposed to be a “waiting period” ended up becoming one of our favorite parts of the morning. We slowed down, explored details we would have rushed past, and let the park unfold a little more naturally than our usual touring plan.

Our “waiting for the ride to reopen” time ended up being one of our favorite parts of the day.

A while later we noticed testing start, headed back over, and ended up riding the same day.

That experience honestly sums up Epic Universe right now. The ride may not always run on a perfect schedule yet, but the park itself isn’t built around a single attraction. A flexible plan works far better than a rigid one — and it dramatically improves your chances of riding.

What you’re seeing isn’t a failing ride. You’re watching a brand-new park settle into normal operations, and reliability will improve as it matures.
