Massive Power Outage at Walt Disney World: Dozens of Rides Down After Severe Storm (August 2025)

This evening, just after 5:00 p.m., a horrible thunderstorm rolled across Walt Disney World. We were sitting in our resort listening to the rain when the lights suddenly flickered and the power cut out completely. I was on my cell phone and the call was also affected. The power here almost immediately returned. At first, we thought it was just our building caught in the storm, but reports started pouring in from guests in the parks — rides were going down everywhere.

It turns out that what we experienced was part of a much larger power surge triggered by the storm, knocking out more than 40 attractions across all four theme parks.
At Magic Kingdom, headliners like Space Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Pirates of the Caribbean, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Peter Pan’s Flight went offline along with classics like the PeopleMover, Country Bear Jamboree, and Mickey’s PhilharMagic.
At EPCOT, guests were turned away from Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, Soarin’, Mission: SPACE, Living with the Land, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, among others.
Hollywood Studios saw some of its biggest draws shut down, including Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
And even Animal Kingdom wasn’t spared — DINOSAUR and Kali River Rapids both went down.
It wasn’t just inside the parks either. Resorts, including ours, also briefly lost power, which explains the flicker we felt firsthand.
🧚♀️ Pixie Dust Pro Tip: Storms in Central Florida can cause unexpected ride outages. If you’re caught in a situation like this, it’s a good time to pivot to shows, indoor dining, or shopping until things reopen. Always check the My Disney Experience app for the latest attraction status.
As of now, Disney hasn’t released an official statement on the outage or given a timeline for full recovery. With the storm cell moving through, it’s not surprising that the power grid took a hit, but the suddenness and scale of the closures were definitely unusual. An hour and a half later, the some of them are still closed across all the parks.
Good thing we only had a signature dining experience scheduled for this evening. It's always a new adventure here at the parks.
